Police Department


The Town of Hamburg Police Department services 56,259 plus residents on a land area of 48 square miles. The force includes 65 sworn Police Officers, 20 Public Safety Dispatchers (12 full-time, 8 part-time), 3 Dog Control Officers (2 full-time & 1 part-time)and 4 full-time Clerical. The Town Police Department is a full service Department providing for the complete public safety needs of the community including police protective services, emergency medical dispatch, police and fire dispatch and dog control enforcement services.

Certificate of Accreditation

The Town of Hamburg Police Department was originally Accredited in 1991, and continued to meet all applicable requirements established by the New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Council. In 2001, the Council re-evaluated the Agency and granted Accreditation status for the period of June 13, 2001 through June 12, 2006.


Programs & Services

The Town Police Department is a full service Department providing for the complete public safety needs of the community including police protective services, emergency medical dispatch, police and fire dispatch and dog control enforcement services.

The department operates a highly successful Neighborhood Watch Program; a DARE program which reaches pupils from 5th grade and up; Crime Prevention program and community Policing; Youth Bureau services; Youthful Offender Task Force services and Traffic Safety programs which reach over 7,000 pupils yearly.

The patrol force is supplemented by the Detective Bureau, which provides follow-up investigation for all major crimes and includes a Juvenile Bureau; Arson Investigation Unit and in-service training bureau. An Accident Investigation Unit also provides services by the department as well.

The Town of Hamburg's patrol force is also supplemented by the Emergency Service Unit which consists of the Under Water Recovery Team ("URT"), Emergency Response Team ("ERT"), and the Critical Incident Management Team ("CIM"). These units work independently, however, members cross train in other areas of expertise and are able to supplement each other.

The Under Water Recovery Team ("URT")

Consists of 10 divers utilized for water related emergencies requiring surface rescue, body recovery, evidence recovery or water accident management and investigation.

The Emergency Response Team ("ERT")

Consists of 11 tactical and 9 support officers utilized when a situation requires the use of special weapons and tactics, including hostage negotiations.

The Critical Incident Management Team ("CIM")

Consists of 8 officers utilized when a situation requires, a command post, coordination of multi agency response or the utilization of additional manpower to control a situation which is out of the normal realm of patrol duties.


Drug Education/DARE

Town Drug Awarness Program / D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is one ways the Town Police Department gets involved with the Summer Playground Program. Our Town D.A.R.E. Officers make round-robin visits to all playgrounds talking with your children and their friends. Subjects include basic drug awareness-medicine, poisons, substance abuse, self respect and role-model leadership. D.A.R.E. is a year-round, family friendly service education program.
